As a Miami suburb located in Miami-Dade county, Sweetwater was founded in the 1920s after the Miami-Pittsburgh Land Company bought a large plot of land in order to build several Sweetwater Groves. The original plans were interrupted by a hurricane in 1926, and building continued in 1938 when the plot was repurchased and sold in lots. The town was successfully incorporated in 1941.
